Lake Land Networks spawned from the grim reality that many small towns, rural, and cottage areas are severely lacking in broadband network deployments. This is due mostly to the infeasibility of providing access over large geographical areas with dispersed populations.
Current trends indicate that mobility and therefore wireless is to be more important than a stationary high-speed connection. The benefits of enabling your home pc, laptop, wireless phone, pda, and other internet devices to use the same technology to connect to a widespread low cost network are unquestionable. There is currently only one technology available to connect virtually all internet devices, it is known as Wifi. WiFi is both low cost and high performance. Furthermore a properly deployed Wifi network is capable of outperforming the most popular DSL, and Cable Networks. Using Cochrane Ontario as our test bed we launched a proof of concept project which lasted just over a year. After the deployment of every major Wifi technology on all available frequencies we were able to overcome each of the many problems that prevent most WiFi networks from succeeding. Having reliable access with individual connection speeds tested as high as 15mbps and aggregate network throughput of over 40Mbps, available over the better part of 10 Kilometers in every direction, January 1st, 2008 we began official operations. The use of this technology has not only enabled us to provide mobile wireless access over the majority or the town, it also allowed us to provide internet upload speeds higher than anything possible using the currently deployed networks, and make connections available at nearly half the cost. |
